The department of Micro Technology and Medical Device Technology (MIMED) of the Technische Universität München is specialized on Precision Engineering, Micro Technology and Medical Device Engineering. The department takes part in many national and international research programs and is a strong partner in contract research for the industry.

Since 2005, MIMED integrates the longtime experience of the two teams of Professor Emeritus Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Joachim Heinzl, 1978-2005, and Professor Dr. Tim C. Lueth, Humboldt-University Berlin, 1997-2005.

The research labs are located at the new Mechanical Engineering Campus at Munich-Garching and the University Hospital. The team is active in research (Projekte Forschung) and teaching (Projekte Lehre).

CEBIT, March 2008: Minister of Science, Dr. Anette Schavan, and Bundeskanzler Dr. Angela Merkel used the MIMED soft tissue navigation system with a navigated controlled CUSA for treatment of liver phantoms.

May 2008 - Congratulations: Dr.-Ing. Stefan Weber hat einen Ruf an die Universität Bern, Schweiz, erhalten und angenommen. The University of Bern appointed Dr.-Ing. Stefan Weber to a professorship on artificial organs.

November 2008 - Congratulations: Prof. Dr. E.h. Frank Talke, Ph.D., currently Humboldt-Prize Winner at MIMED receives the highest award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME, the ASME Medal.

As result of the DFG Excellence Initiative, MIMED is part of the International Graduate School of Science and Engineering IGSSE (1st line), the Excellence Cluster CoTeSys (2nd line) and the Institute for Advanced Studies IAS (3rd line). Together with LMU München and University Karlsruhe (TH), Technische Universität München was selected as one of the three elite universities of Germany.
